Opifer Robotics is a medtech robotics start-up automating the sterilization of surgical instruments in hospitals. We are incubated at the Arts et Métiers engineering school in Paris and work closely with hospitals.
Sterilization is a critical step in surgery: no procedure can begin without instruments correctly sterilized and assembled into specific kits. Yet the process remains largely manual, often requiring night shifts to meet the next morning's surgical schedule and placing significant strain on operators. At Opifer, we are building a robotic solution to automate the bottleneck of the sterilization process: instrument inspection and kit assembly.

Open position
We are looking for an intern or Master's end-of-study project student to help build a prototype robotic solution combining AI-based computer vision with robotics.
The project's objective is to recognize and estimate the pose of surgical instruments presented in bulk, detect potential anomalies on these instruments, and integrate the resulting pipeline into an industrial-grade robot.
Your responsibilities
- Build the vision pipeline and select the relevant algorithms (e.g., SAM, FoundationPose, PatchCore, EfficientAD)
- Map recurring anomalies for each surgical instrument type (e.g., residual contamination, wear) in collaboration with healthcare professionals
- Train the pipeline on real surgical instruments and run test campaigns to validate performance
- Define the optimal camera configuration, references, and lighting conditions
- Integrate the vision pipeline into an industrial-grade robot, conduct lab testing, and propose hardware optimizations (e.g., robotic arm, gripper)
You will work directly with the founder (engineer, ex-BCG), alongside Arts et Métiers resources (laboratories, prototyping centers, etc.), and healthcare professionals (sterilization department heads, surgeons, scrub nurses). We are located in Paris, in the Arts & Métiers campus near Place d'Italie. Indicative timeline: starting September 2026 until March 2027 (possible to arrange different dates depending on your program).
Qualifications
- (Ongoing) Master's degree in computer vision, robotics, automation or similar fields
- Proven ability to build computer vision tools and algorithms (e.g., YOLO, FoundationPose). Proven ability to build robotics applications (e.g., via ROS)
- Capability to propose innovative technical solutions and leverage university experts for guidance — significant autonomy required for this role as we are a start-up
- Entrepreneurial mindset, strong prioritization skills and pivoting capability
